Fun

Amsterdam Pride

Sunday, August 2, 2015 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

20150801_120205I spent the day in Amsterdam yesterday on the KPN boat during the Canal Parade of Amsterdam Pride. It was a fantastic experience, I’m so glad I got this opportunity to go. When I got home last night I was exhausted, but it was so, so worth it.

I drove to Amsterdam with two of my colleagues, Cindy and Thomas. All of us neatly in white pants as required by our organisers. We parked near the station and took a bus to the meet-up point. There we were given our company t-shirt and various decorations.

After waiting until everyone was there, we headed to the embarkation point. Our boat was not quite as large as I had imagined, considering we were about 60 people total. Once we were all on board, it turned out to be roomier than it looked. The boat had a middle catwalk of sorts and underneath were stored boxes of iced drinks. We each got a lunch box and after eating the boat slowly moved out.

20150801_140543We first headed for out waiting spot. There we met up with the other KPN boat. This was a boat without people but filled with screens and cameras. People from all around the world could tune in to a special website and watch the parade live from the camera’s on that boat. They could also leave video messages on the website which were played on the screens during the parade.
Then, when it was time to move out, we took our place in line and the parade started. It was immensely impressive to be there on the water and see the hundred of thousands of people on the streets and on smaller boats along the edges of the canals. All of them happy, cheering, waving. Some throwing beads (I even caught one) or flowers or shooting at us with water guns.

IMG-20150801-WA0022As part of a boat you’re expected to be lively. Each boat generally has their own DJ both to entertain, but also to keep their people motivated to move. I’ve never been much of a dancer, but I never danced this much in my live as on that boat.

The whole parade took about two hours and was, at times, risky. There’s over twenty bridges that we had to pass. None of which can be raised. And some of those are so low that we all had to drop to our knees and duck our heads to not lose our heads.

And every time we got to one of those bridges, we also had to tilt our confetti cannon. Which was a fairly unwieldy thing. I happened to be positioned near it most of the time so I would assist the boat steward with the cannon.

At the end of the parade we were at the other end of the city. While disembarking we ate some finger food that was served and had some group photos taken. After that some people remained in the city, but for us it was time to head back to the North. We took a train back to the station where the car was and headed home. We stopped in Lelystad for a quick McDonalds dinner and made it back to Groningen in a very respectable time, thanks to Thomas’ driving.

Party Up (Up In Here)

Sunday, July 28, 2013 by Tse Moana 1 Comment

Spiffy OutfitFriday was this party from work. And I’m not normally a party kind of person, but this time, I decided to go. Mainly because of the other people that were also going 🙂

We (being Nienke, Nico and I) decided to go “fancy dress”. Nico’d bought a suit, Nienke had a sparkly dress, and I bought new pants and a red shirt to go with the vest I already had. Accessorized it up with my pocket watch and a silver sparkly bow tie (as did Nico). Meeting point was outside work, and there would be limousines to drive all of us to the party location 😀

Turned out there were three, a Lincoln, a Chrysler and a frakkin Hummer! Of course we decided to take the Hummer 😀

The party itself was actually really good. Not at all what I had expected (I tend to end up in corners going ‘can I go home now?”).

After the obligatory waiting, and the intro talks the music started, and it was actually good. It was this DJ duo where one of em regularly played the violin with the music the other guy was doing. I’d never seen something like that before and I really enjoyed it. Plus it was good music to dance to.

I usually have a hard time not moving when I hear music, or singing along. So before I knew it, I was dancing. And that had been a while 😀 I ended up dancing along another co-worker, picked up some extra moves and had an all around great time.

Too bad we had to leave early because stupid public transport.

Inner City, Beards, Soestdijk

Tuesday, June 22, 2010 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

Got off work early today. And so did Nienke. And while I had agreed with my mom to meet her at the train station halfway home, there was time left so Nien and I decided to hit the city. I still needed to go the party store and see if they had a beard, ideally blue, for Castlefest. So we made our way to the inner city and spent quite some time at the party store marveling at the many, many fun things they had. I’m so definitely going back there again. I saw a couple nice things to create scary looking Halloween decorations while also being usable for LARP and such (foam torn off limbs 😀 ).

They didn’t have any good looking beards I liked, let alone blue ones. Since it’s probably gonna be warm during Castlefest, I figured I don’t want a really big beard anyway. I ended up with a Jack Sparrow-like beard. It’s not blue, but we’ll figure something out for that. Nienke, who’s going as the rat catcher of Hamelin, bought a pretty Venetian type eye-mask in cream with gold edges and musical notes on it.

After that we headed out towards another party store to see if they had beards. Along the way I felt festive and sunny and bought the both of us awesome ice cream (pistachio and hazelnut/chocolate for Nienke, cookie/vanilla, lemon and hazelnut/chocolate for me). Before reaching the second party store we quickly hopped into this cute newish store I’d not seen before. I bought two very cute bibs for the new second cousins that are expected in July and September. The second party store, finally, kinda sucked since they had no proper beards, just mostly wigs and hats and other gag gifts.

We then decided to head back to the train station and wait for the train that would lead us to the meet-up with mom. We drank something at the Burger King before the train got there and then got off at Winsum to meet mom. She had some errands to run too so we hit a few more stores. I bought a new birthday calendar to replace the one I have. I’ve used it for four years or so now and want something else to look at 😀

We then dropped Nienke off at home, I grabbed my things and went with mom to their place. I’ll be sleeping here tonight because tomorrow we’re going to Soestdijk Palace and we need to be at the bus really, really early.
