Gert

The Railway Man

Thursday, May 15, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

Tuesday I watched the Riddick movies, while working. The first one was mostly Meh. The second was way more fun, with the Necromongers and such. The third was the best of the three. Poor puppy.

Today, Gert and I went to see The Railway Man after work.

It’s a movie after a true story about a man, Eric Lomax, stationed in Singapore during World War II. After the surrender of Singapore by the British in 1942, he and his fellow soldiers are captured and transported to work on the Thai-Burma railroad. Because Lomax is a radio man, he and his troop are at first kept in relative good conditions. But then the men start building a radio. And when it is found, Lomax takes the blame. Despite it being a radio only capable of receiving signals, he is extensively tortured because the Japanese believe he has been sending signals. One of the men torturing him is Interpreter Takashi Nagase.

After the war, Nagase escapes prosecution by pretending he never did anything but interpret. Lomax gets sent home and learns to sort of live with his experiences. Years later, he marries Patti. And when she discovers how deep his trauma runs, she sets in motion a sequence of events wherein Lomax travels back to the place where he was held. There is a museum there, now, and a Buddhist Temple. And Nagase is the tourguide there.

What follows is a deeply emotional meeting between the two where they try to reconcile the past and find a way to live with what happened instead of despite of it.

The movie takes a few liberties with the real story, notably in how the meeting between Lomax and Nagase plays out, but on the whole I found it deeply moving. The movie is slow (some might say too slow) and heavy;  it cuts deep, both in the flash backs in the camp that depict the torture Lomax had to endure, as well as in the current time where the scars of that earlier time are still clearly visible. It is well served for ruminations about Human Nature, what one does in the most dire of circumstances to survive, how and what it does to you in the long run, and what is needed for true processing and dealing with things.

Passion

Thursday, April 17, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

So… Tuesday my new manager, who I’ve had all of two weeks at the most, announced they’re stepping down. No word yet on successor, but that might take a while. Interesting to see what happens with a power vacuum like that.

Yesterday I went to the movies with Gert. We watched Divergent first. He hadn’t seen it yet, and I didn’t mind watching it again. After we had a little break and then went in to see Yves Saint Laurent. That was a very good film. Insofar I’m familiar with the fifties and sixties it seemed to me a fairly realistic film that gave a good picture of who YSL was and how he was shaped by his life and experiences.

We had dinner at Pappa Joe’s and then went for ice cream at Toscana, they have the best selection of flavours ever.

Tonight, The Passion was in Groningen.  A huge musical show and parade to play out the passion of Christ. Various singers played the key biblical figures singing contemporary songs to symbolise the emotions and events of each sequence. Meanwhile a huge group of people carry and follow this huge shining cross to the center of the celebrations. This is the third time or so they did this, and since I’m not a Christian, Easter has little meaning to me in this sense. Since, however, it was Groningen, I did watch it on TV. I tweeted some comments during (and really, they had the stupidest hashtag: tp14…) but in short: the guy playing Jesus had the right vibe going, especially beard-wise. The guy playing Judas is a musical star here and it showed. His voice was by far the best for an event like this and he had this brooding vampire vibe going which worked well.

Rijksmuseum

april13-1Yesterday I went to the Rijksmuseum with Gert, Nico and Jeroen. Not last Christmas, but the one before, we all got free tickets to the new Rijksmuseum in our Christmas package at work. The tickets were valid for a long time, but last weekend were the final dates. So, with great pain and cursing of the lords of Traffic, we managed to set a the date for yesterday. Jeroen had lost his ticket, but since they were 2 people per ticket, that wasn’t a problem and allowed me to ask Gert along.

We left Groningen with the 7:30 train, picking Jeroen & Nico up along the way, and arriving in Amsterdam a little after ten. With the additional tram time we made it to the museum around 11. We made a preliminary selection of which bits we definitely wanted to see and set ourselves to wander around. It was awesome. I took pictures here and there of the pieces that resonated with me most, but mainly just looked with my real eye and not the camera. Saw the Nightwatch, which was smaller in length than I had thought, and took an obligatory selfie 😀

We made it through in a lot less time than I had thought. After wandering around the museumshop (and buying a small guide book, two notepads, stamps and a tote to carry it in) we were back outside around 3.

We headed to a cafe nearby for lunch but the service was so horrible that we didn’t stick around long. It took ages to get service, then it took ages for our drinks to arrive. And when we had finished those, the lunch menu that they would “bring shortly” was still nowhere in sight. So we decided to leave, their loss. No one was paying any attention, we probably could have left without paying. Fortunately for them, we’re too nice. So I tackled a random waiter hanging out near the edge so we could pay. He would go get someone… This went slightly quicker than the other waits, but still…

We decided to take the tram back, Gert and I very badly wanted to go to the American Book Center 😀 Which we did. Scored five books and could’ve hung out there for much longer, but we needed food by now. The others had eaten something from a nearby market, but I wasn’t so lucky. From there, we walked back towards the station, stopping along the way at a McDonalds for some food.

I’ll post some of the pics later this week after I’m done editing.

Sunshine Day

Wednesday, April 2, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

april2-1

Went in to work a little earlier today so I would be free at noon to meet Gert for a movie. We had lunch at Subway and then crossed the street to sit in the sunshine with coffee and cake at TOET. I can definitely live with moments like that, it was an hour well spent. The we crossed the street again to hit the cinema since our showing of The Monuments Men was at 13:30. It was a pretty good, fun, movie. Insofar a World War II movie can be “fun”. I liked the characters and the actors playing the characters. It was also interesting to watch and get a glimpse of what the real guys were doing back then. I missed a good through line. There was no real plot, it felt more like several vignettes that featured the same characters. Not in itself bad, but not really good either. The movie is saved by its casting.
Tonight I tried yoga at the gym. I’m used to Pilates, and figured yoga would be calmer and more zen and stuff. Instead, I died o.0 It’s crazy intensive and much more challenging than Pilates is. Although it did end with a nice couple minutes of meditation.

april2-2Yesterday I finished After Earth, the book of the movie. Now, the movie was really bad, but the book is actually pretty good. It helps it was written by Peter David. This is also what convinced me to take the book when I was over at Kim’s the other week to rummage through her box of books-to-get-rid-of. I’ve read several Star Trek tie-ins that Peter David wrote and I really enjoy those. He’s a good writer. Which was evident throughout the book. Of course he has to follow the script but he really managed to make it his own and work in a lot of extra background info about the world of After Earth that rounded out the story. The book is much better than the movie.

Lord Erik and the Spartans in the Midwest

Thursday, March 20, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

march20-1Movie day with Gert yesterday. I had the whole day off, so I went to the city early in the morning to meet up with him. Did some shopping first at Xenos where I bought me two awesome tea boxes.

Afterwards we went to see 300: Rise of an Empire. It is exactly what you expect of it: lots of slaughter, lots of blood, lots of gore, lots of slow motion bits to emphasise the killing and blood, very little plot. There’s nothing in this movie that sticks with you, the characters are one dimensional made of cardboard, not even a flicker of personality to make you care even in the slightest if they might die or not.

The second movie of the day was August: Osage County. Now this is a movie I really loved. It’s a family drama themed movie where, after their father disappears and then dies, the three children come home to their family home in the midwest. This leads to secrets being unearthed, arguing and awkward moments.

march20-2Today I had a late shift so I went to the store in the morning. After getting to the register with my basket I realised I forgot my wallet at home :S Fortunately I could place my basket near the register while I biked back home to get it. So my quick shopping trip took a bit longer than expected 😀

Afterward I cleaned the litter boxes and put the dishes in the dishwasher to make room on the counter for me to cook. Then, on to work I went. Work itself was uneventful, but late in the afternoon one of my coworkers approached me with a picture. “Look!” he said. And when I did I spied a picture of him on the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones! As it turned out, HBO NL was visiting us again with the Throne (I think this was the third time total since I’ve worked there). The previous times I missed the opportunity.

This time around, I dropped everything and almost ran for it. I got lucky as the dude manning it was about to start cleaning up the shoot but he agreed to take my picture. So I grabbed the sword that was also present and sat on the Throne. For a prop used solely for this kind of photo shoot it’s remarkably solid and lifelike 😀 I was giddy with excitement, but managed to pull a serious face for the photo. The dude shot, the dude printed and I left with my shiny, shiny photo. After I left, a couple of my teammates showed up and also got lucky, but then he really left.

And of course I have to show you the picture 😀

Behold! Lord Erik of Westeros!

Everything is Awesome!

Nienke’s parents had it in their hallway, where it stood in the way for years. So they offered it to us since we were looking for a better cabinet. We went to pick it up Tuesday. So thanks to Nienke’s Parents for parting with it, and Dad for driving us there to pick it up. We ended up putting it against the side wall (left of where it is in the picture) because that fit better, and also allowed us to rearrange some other cabinetry. Bottom is for large(r) tools and random crap, top for plates. And on top of it…

Wednesday Gert and I went to the movies, double feature time 😀 We started with an early afternoon Vampire Academy, which is a very uneven movie. Disjointed story, jumpy cuts, and it doesn’t know whether it wants to be a high school dramedy or a supernatural vampire movie. I did like the girl playing Rose and the dude playing Dimitri, though. In between we walked around the city and ate at La Place before going back to see The Lego Movie. I had low expectations of it, but it was definitely awesome!

Thursday I got the day off, which gives me a glorious four day weekend! Played lots of Warcraft these last few days. Also stopped at Bruna yesterday and picked up some comics. Today I got fresh bread stuff from the bakery for breakfast, made a giant pan of soup, stopped at the Blokker and got a lantern for the window sill and read my comics 😀

Also ordered tickets to two shows that are coming up at the Stadschouwburg. On April 8 there’s a play/music theater version of Gone With the Wind which seemed interesting so I got two tickets for that, we’ll see who wants to go with 😀 On June 2, Daniel Lohues is performing so I got two tickets for that as well to go there with Mom.

Achievement Unlocked: Succesfully Avoided (3) Excercise Demons

Sunday, February 9, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

Managed to skip going to the gym for the entire week, bad me. On Monday I skipped because I realised I didn’t really like the one half of the class I was going to, and to just do the other half isn’t long enough. Plus the instructor always manages to guilt trip me into staying for that second half anyway and I don’t like that. Tuesday I skipped because there’s too much time between getting home from work and going to the gym. By the time I have to go get ready, I’ve settled in and really don’t want to go anymore. Today I slept in and missed Pilates, which is a shame because I do like it.

Wednesday I went over to Gert to, couple months late, exchange birthday prezzies. I got him the NL variant of Ticket to Ride and he got me Machiavelli. We played Ticket to Ride a couple times and then watched some Doctor Who and Attack on Titan. I’d never seen that before but I really like it. Was also nice to just hang out and chat and stuff. Usually we go to the movies and then there’s less catching up time 😀

At work the buzz is that the workflow they took is coming back in week 8, so yay!

Yesterday and today I played a lot of Warcraft. Decided to try out my solo abilities on Cataclysm Dungeons. I face roll Burning Crusade stuff, but never really tried soloing Wrath instances since I was guilded back then and did all that with them. Managed to do Stonecore, Voretx Pinnacle, Blackrock Caverns and Grim Batol, all on normal. It wasn’t face roll easy, but it was very well doable. I wonder once I get some more Timeless Isle pieces, if I can try my hand at heroic versions. I need that to finally get my Ramkahen rep to exalted. I want my camel 😀

I also finished Cycle of Hatred earlier this week, good book.

And, I finally managed to write three letters to some people in my pen pal group, yay me. I’ll be mailing them out tomorrow, together with the traveling notebook.

The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway

Thursday, January 16, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

Tuesday I went to the movies with Gert. We saw Frozen. It is one of the awesomest movies I’ve seen in a long time. I’m already a fan of Disney movies (particularly animated) but I love this one so much. I watched it again yesterday and am waiting for it to be released on bluray 😀

Yesterday, my bed also came. I bought it late december, but with the holidays and all my room wasn’t ready for it. So they stored it for a while longer until I made an appointment to have it delivered yesterday. It didn’t go quite as I expected. Turns out that, it being a boxspring, the bottom is one giant piece. The only separate things about it are the mattress and the headboard…

So now it stands in the hallway, shuffled in a corner fenced in by a cabinet and the coat rack 😀 I first need to finish upstairs, and then get some help to move it up the stairs.

Pacific Rim

Friday, July 26, 2013 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

WPacific Rim: Gipsy Dancerent to see Pacific Rim with Gert last night. I didn’t really know anything about the movie. Hadn’t even heard about it until a day or three ago. Didn’t know what to expect except “Godzilla-like monsters” and “giant robots”. I’m always up for sci-fi (related) things, and I’d seen a few gifsets on tumblr about the movie that made me think I’d like it.  So when Gert, rather urgently, suggested we do a movie, I suggested Pacific Rim. He (obviously) said yes.

After a quick stop at the Burger King we headed to see the movie, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. The plot was more sci-fi, and less ridiculous, than I had expected. I liked the characters, and their interactions. And I loved Mako. A female character that gets to walk around in a normal uniform instead of a sexy outfit that doesn’t give any protection at all, a woman who can fight just as well as the guys, is just as damaged as the guys and can generally hold her own among the guys without the movie constantly getting in our face that OMG it’s a guuuuurl.

Pacific Rim: Mako MoriI liked the idea of the pilots needing to be brain-connected to be able to control the Jaegers, but I would have liked to see a bit more about how it works and what its effects are. Besides the giant flashback to Mako’s childhood, we don’t much get to see that, and I would have liked to know more about the effects of the neural handshake outside of the actual piloting. Does it linger, do you always keep basic access to each others memories? Bits and pieces with the other pairs would seem to suggest this, but I always like more of the sciencey stuff.

In that regard, I looooved the Doctors. Doctor German (I forgot his name), is more well known to me as Owen from Torchwood, and I could not stop myself from just calling him Owen in my mind. Pacific Rim: KaijuI loved how he played his character. Newton was fun, too, but a bit too naive at points. The interplay between was awesome thought. Even though they bicker a lot, they come through for each other in the end.

And Ron Perlman. Not much to say about him, he was really just the same sort of guy as he often is in movies. Gruff, rough and very in your face. But I love him for it 😀

Idris Elba was brilliant. I haven’t seen him (consciously) in a lot of stuff, but I loved his character, and I can see why many people would like him to be an incarnation of The Doctor.

Pacific Rim: Stacker PentecostRaleigh, I kept thinking “I know this actor, I know this actor”, but I couldn’t place him and that distracted me some. But he was nice to look at, a decent guy and I really enjoyed his relationship with Mako.

Other, major high point? No love story. None of that crap of the rugged and damaged pilot falling in love with the fragile and damaged new copilot leading to danger in the middle and an eventual triumph. They became friends, and obviously really close because of the Drift but no romance. Yay! Give me more non–romance!

Ooh, and I just spy on the Internets that there will be a Pacific Rim 2 😀

Of Baby Steps and Giant Leaps — The Gender Edition

Monday, February 27, 2012 by Tse Moana 2 Comments

After being quiet about the subject for quite a while I feel it’s time to start talking about gender again. And specifically mine. At first I wasn’t going to, at least not yet, but if I want this blog to be a real representation of my life, I need to incorporate this. And I find writing shit down (in addition to vocalizing to myself) helps me process things. Secondary to that, I hope this will make it easier on my friends, family and wider social circle (in a probably mostly vain hope that more than five people read this).

So, last time I spoke about my gender identity, which was March 2011, and before that (with more detail) December 2010, I mentioned how I was growing away from identifying as genderqueer (being beyond and both man and woman) to a more masculine identity. This process has continued, and not too long after the March post I realized the genderqueer moniker no longer fit at all. Woman was not a part of my gender identity. The older I get, and the more I let myself be the man I am in thought, and appearance, the more I realized I could no longer live in this body. At that point I started to seriously think about transitioning, and doing my research. Because, even with a real life example in my friend circle, everyone’s experience is different and my process will be different than his.

So, at that point I came out to myself as a transgender man.

I allowed myself to live with that (silent) label and to experience the feeling and as time went on, I felt so much more at peace on such a deep level. Even though I could (and can) still not look at myself, unclothed, either directly or in a mirror and am in denial of my body whenever I am not binding, I felt myself moving forward.

When the new year came around, I adopted my motto for this year  ‘Just Do It‘  and decided now was the time to start taking practical steps. After all, the process of transitioning can take two, three years easily and I kinda want to be whole by the time I turn 30.

So, early January I went to my doctor and asked for a referral to the Gender Team at the UMCG. She was supportive and seemed to understand at least a little, and she went to make it happen. I would get a letter with my appointment date.

Later that week or early next I don’t quite remember, I received that letter. The appointment for intake was for February 24th, at 13:45. This also meant it was time to tell The Parents. While this was a very butterfly-stomach moment, it went well. They took it better than expected (granted, they were aware of the binder and some related shit so it couldn’t really have been a total surprise). Mom understands the whole thing a bit better than Dad does, but it will come.

I told Nienke the day I’d gone to my doctor for the referral. I told Eva and Ingrid during a game night at Eva’s place along with Jarig who was obviously also there, and Anneke and Julius who dropped by to dress up Ingrid 😀 I told Gert about a week and a half or so before the appointment. I wasn’t sure yet when and how to tell others, so I decided to keep it quiet for now.

I spent the month and a half I had to wait for the appointment being ecstatic and nerve-wracked (in a good way) at the same time. Finally the day came. I’d taken the day off work, and Mom offered to drive me. I really appreciated this, not just in the ‘thanks for the ride’ way, but also on a deeper level as a show of support and love. We got to the hospital plenty on time. After I registered at the front desk, we made our way to the relevant clinic where we sat and waited for twenty minutes or so.

Then the doctor showed up and I went with him. And then it turned out the referral hadn’t quite been processed right…

Yes, the doctor was part of the Gender Team, but he was the plastic surgeon… Not quite the one you need for the intake. So we did a quick history with a basic ‘this is how I feel‘ thing and some medical history and he then wrote a consult for his Gender Team colleague. So this means I will be getting a new letter, with a new appointment some time this week (I hope) and I get to do the giddy nervousness again. Especially since there’s no telling how soon the psych guy can fit me in. I hope it’s soon.

This ending is a bit abrupt, but I’ve been going on long enough now, and I don’t quite know how to knit a proper ending here. Plus I’ve been hovering over the publish button for the last five minutes deciding if I’m ready to put this out there. I hope this will lead to a more gradual coming out, versus having to suddenly go ‘hey everybody, listen up!’

A catless writer is almost inconceivable. It’s a perverse taste, really, since it would be easier to write with a herd of buffalo in the room than even one cat; they make nests in the notes and bite the end of the pen and walk on the typewriter keys.
