Books

Paper Towns, Little Prince, Ant Man

Friday, August 7, 2015 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

Gert and I planned to go see Paper Towns so I wanted to read the book before hand. I did the same with The Fault in Our Stars so figured I’d continue the practice. I really enjoyed the book, it was fun, a bit weird sometimes, and still felt realistic.

Wednesday afternoon was the day we planned for movies. We started with The Little Prince. This was a very sweet movie, but I was still a bit disappointed. I was expecting something a little closer to the book. Instead it was a new story where an eccentric old man meets his new neighbour: a serious, studious little girl. As the summer vacation progresses, she spends more time with the old man and he tells her stories of his travels. In those travels he met the Little Prince. Now, he wants to go back out and find him. So he’s building a plane in his backyard to do so and then weird adventures happen.

20150805_160627Paper Towns was next, but we had some time to kill in between. So we ended up on the market square and enjoyed the sun before heading back to the cinema. Paper Towns was a pretty good movie. The ending didn’t match the book, which is a shame. I felt it lost some of its impact this way.

Thursday I hit the cinema again, this time with Nienke. We went to see Ant-Man, which is a great movie. Not quite up to Guardians of the Galaxy standard, but I had a lot of fun watching this.

Afterwards, we decided on a whim to do another movie and headed for a re-watch of Jurassic World. ‘t Was a great night 😀

Had my final check-up after surgery today. All is well, it’s healing marvelously. I am now officially cleared to fully use my arms/upper chest again, which is really nice. This also means I van ride my bicycle again 😀

The Time Machine CoverI read The Time Machine earlier this week. I always thought I’d seen the old movie and never gave it much more thought. But when I read the book, I found so many things that were unfamiliar. So I looked up the movie and while scrolling through some photos realised I might’ve seen bits of it, but definitely not the whole movie. So it was a good thing I read the book.

The older language took some getting used to, but once I did, it was a fairly good read. More written like a science report than a novel in places but it has an interesting evolution of humanity.

Staycation

Wednesday, June 10, 2015 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

9533378As of a few days ago, I have a holiday 😀 Ten relaxing days off, no work, no plans, no pressure, just chill and have fun.

I celebrated the start of the holiday by finishing my current book, Hounded, by Kevin Hearne. It’s the first book in a urban supernatural fantasy series called the Iron Druid Chronicles. The main character is an immortal, 2000 year old Druid who has imbued himself with the essence of Iron so as to better fight of faeries. He’s being hounded by various Celtic deities who either want to kill him or help him (although mainly for their own good). Throw in his vampire and werewolf lawyers, his occult/magic shop and him being able to talk with his dog and you have all the ingredients I like. Because of this, I expected to like the book, and I did. In fact, I love it. I’m looking forward to getting the other parts and reading more about the adventures of Atticus.

10429349_10153032689903155_5508640791118138324_nYesterday I went to see Mad Max: Fury Road with Jasper and Nienke. It was a glorious movie! Very little plot, but after seeing the trailer a few times,  I was prepared for this and totally pumped to see it. All I expected was two hours of racing, chasing, fighting and sheer ridiculousness, and that is exactly what I got and I wanna see it again.

17332969Today I finished another book, The 100, by Kass Morgan. I was intrigued by the premise of the book: Earth is uninhabited after a global ecological crisis. The survivors have lived in a trio of generation ships in orbit waiting for Earth to become habitable again. When the clock starts ticking, 100 juvenile delinquents are, instead of killed, dropped on the planet as test subjects to see if it is safe. This also ticks a bunch of my boxes: young adult, sci-fi, dystopia; but I found the execution a bit lacking. I’m missing substance. I liked the flashbacks that showed what life on the ships is like for the various social classes, but overall it felt very light, and not enough time was spent furthering the plot.

Since this is the first in a series, I expect this to pick up in later parts, but I’m not in any hurry to get them. I am curious, though, of the TV series made of it so I will be watching that sometime.

Around the World in a Handful of Towns

Monday, April 13, 2015 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

20150412_155757Sunday proved to be a day of moderate adventure and great fun 😀 Eva’s little boy had his birthday earlier this week, and Sunday they were celebrating.

So early in the afternoon I traveled to Groningen. I met up with Mellien on the train, which helped ease the half hour wait for the next train. We then boarded for Grijpskerk where Ingrid picked us up to drive to the farm.

20150412_155915We chatted, drank tea, ate tasty cake and gave presents. I’d bought a couple children’s books in Frisian and Gronings for him. Two for him directly, and one and a audio book first to Eva as he’s not old enough yet. Both parents and boy seemed to like it, so I call it a success 😀

They had bought a pair of young rabbits the day before, and on Sunday Eva’s brother in law was bringing two more young rabbits as a birthday present. They are very handsome, but turned out to be a weeee bit larger than expected.

Instead of about the same size as the others, they’re about double that. Which made the cage that was supposed to be their home for a day or two rather on the small side.

We left at the end of the afternoon as Ingrid, who had come from Leeuwarden, had to go back there as well. However, as saying goodbye is wont to do, it took a while before we set out. We then had the bad luck of finding the bridge open, which resulted in Mellien and I missing the train.

After comparing options, we decided to ride with Ingrid to Buitenpost to grab the train there. This was more fun, because more time with Ingrid, and left us a half hour wait in Buitenpost as opposed to waiting an hour in Grijpskerk.

Fortunately the weather was fairly nice so the wait was easy. And once back in Groningen, I treated myself to a milkshake to pass the half hour wait there for the train home. So, quite a trip, but it was worth it!

Prezzies

Saturday, December 27, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

20141222_112029After Christmas dinner it was time for prezzies. First we exchanged gifts with my parents, and after they left, Nienke and I continued the unwrapping party with our gifts for each other.

We’d already given each other one of the prezzies the day before, but now it was time for the rest. We usually set a budget, and always go over, but I think we never went quite as far over as we did this year 😀

Mom and Dad gave me the CD with the soundtrack of Guardians of the Galaxy. A definite hit as the songs keep getting stuck in my head 🙂 I got Mom a bath set with lotion and fluffy things, and for Dad dried meat sausages, he always likes a good sausage.

Nienke gave me awesome things! Starfleet Academy and Medical Academy buttons, a necklace of the Elven brooch given to the Hobbits, a colouring book and a cute story book, a letter E, and the best thing ever: a USS Voyager model kit. I’ll have to order paint first, but I can’t wait to build it.

I got Nienke a Comic Con Exclusive Buffy Pop Vinyl, the eleventh Doctor’s sonic screwdriver, a 1:64 model of the Impala from Supernatural along with a replica of Dean’s necklace that Sammy gave him, blue fuzzy gloves, a guitar stand and the unicorn plush from Despicable Me. The cats each got a toy, as well.

Then tonight Kim came by to watch the Olivier B. Bommel movie Als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel and then we saw Flushed Away before also exchanging gifts.

I’d gotten both Nienke and Kim a chocolate bar, and gave Kim a set of mugs with owls on it, as well as a bracelet with a Mockingjay pin. I’d also gotten some toys and candies for her cats. She got me chocolate, fudge and a Pop Vinyl of Invisible Bilbo!

43

10502009_10204165969603136_4946591070366997143_n. 28-10jpgToday is my parent’s anniversary, they’ve been married for 43 years. I went to visit them this morning, brought some roses, too 🙂

I also got another confirmation of how awesome social media can be. I’ve been looking for this one book I read as  a kid. For years, I couldn’t remember the title, so I would occasionally look online to see if I could identify it. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I struck gold and identified the book as Kind zonder naam by Anna Cool.

Unfortunately, it’s out of print, and despite checking book markets and second hand sites, I could never find it. Inspired by the story of Koos, I decided to give Facebook a try. So I posted the cover, and basically what I just wrote above here on my wall. Normally everything is sealed to just friends, but I made it public to facilitate sharing. Some friends shared it, my mom shared it, and from her wall, some of her friends shared it.

10422959_10152487441383155_4479292488066434203_nLater in the day, Mom commented saying that a friend of one of her friends might have it, she was going to check. And today, I heard that indeed that friend has it, and is willing to part with it. So I’m getting my book, after years of looking for it 😀

I’m ecstatic! It might be a week or two, though, before it gets here as Mom’s friend will be picking it up when she goes to see her friend, who lives elsewhere in the land. No matter, I can wait 🙂

In a Mine! In a Mine! Where a Million Diamonds Shine!

Sunday, October 26, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

20141026_000544I bought this book recently, but didn’t get around to actually using it until today. The point of the book is to carry it with you while you turn your normal daily life into a scavenger hunt to find the items listed in the book. And when you have found one of the items, you turn around the book and flip to a random page. The edge of the page then tells you what to do with the item you’ve found and then, after you’ve done that, you can register it in the book.

20141026_000602Yesterday I joined Ingrid in going to The Farm to celebrate Julius’ birthday. It was a really fun day with good people and tasty food (they had made a wide assortment of cakes, tea and candies). While walking around checking out the new goats I found a magnificent white feather. And today I realised the book had a feather on the list 😀

As you can see, it has a space to note the time and date and how and where I found it. I wrote in the corner what I was supposed to do with it (Play) and since that isn’t something you can really show, I described it around the feather. And to keep it festive, I taped it to the page with fabric tape.

20141025_213358I also spent some time, yesterday, building my new Warcraft Lego Set. It consists of a Goblin on a rocket and a Night Elf on a sabercat (aka “Barren’s Chase”).

On Friday, Gert and I went to see Pride. This is an historical film taking place in England during the miner’s strike of 1984-85. The movie opens in London during a march for LGBT rights. After the march, a group of friends meet up in the bookstore of one of them and discuss politics. As they get to the strike, they realise that the plight of the miner’s is not unlike theirs. Both are not seen very positively in the public eye and garner a lot of abuse.

The group decides to band together to raise money for the miners. Raising money is very much needed as the union’s funds are getting depleted and social security is limited, so the miners are short on money and necessities.

Thus the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners organisation is formed. It doesn’t always go well, but eventually they have raised a fair amount and go about looking for a way to get it to the needy. They contact the National Union of Miners, but they refuse the donation, not wanting to be associated with the LGSM. At first discouraged, the group decide not to give up and start looking for a town to give their money to. They find the Welsh town of Onllwyn and are ecstatic when they accept the money.

Pride_posterThey pile into their van and travel to Wales to hand over the money. Once there, the atmosphere is awkward at first, as the town had not quite understood they were a gay group. However over the course of the movie, the continued support and interactions show most of the town that the LGSM are people, too, and they gain a mutual understanding of each other that is paid back after the strike ends.

I loved this movie. It takes place in the same time period as The Normal Heart, and touches on some of the same topics (acceptance, gay rights, AIDS) but mostly this is a heartwarming story in a difficult time, whereas The Normal Heart is heartbreaking.

Blue

Saturday, October 18, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

PlatesBought myself some extra plates when I went to IKEA with Eva the other day. I already had four of those sets, two in purple and two in green, but I wanted two more to make it easier to set a table for more people. At first I was going to do another green and another purple, but I liked the blue a lot. And it goes with the other colours well.

I also got some christmas crafty things, a ladle and a big wooden fork. Purely because I have many wooden stirring spoons and it seemed like a fun addition to the collection 😀

I started rereading The Elenium today. I recently acquired both The Elenium and The Tamuli from a second-hand store. My Eddings collection is almost complete now. All I’m missing is the Rivan Codex. I forgot how much I liked The Elenium. The Belgariad/Malloreon are my favourites, mainly because they were the start of my dive into fantasy, but with Garion being just a boy when it starts, and not really having outgrown his boyish tendencies in the second series, it can be a bit too young sometimes. Sparhawk, in contrast is a man around forty (or at least that’s the age I always see him as*) with life experience and a clear view of what he wants and how to go about life.

I expect I’ll be finishing the series fairly quick 🙂

*He is described as being older. He was the Champion of the King, and then when the Princess was born, he practically raised her. Then when she was eight and her father died, Sparhawk was banished. He returns when Ehlana is 18 and becomes Queen. So, considering he must have been an adult when he took over the care of Ehlana, I picture him being around 20-25 then. Now, almost twenty years have passed which makes him 38-43.

You Are Not Prepared

Thursday, October 9, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment
20141009_203639

Illidan: “You are not prepared!” Arthas: “WTF dude!? I’m not the enemy here!”

Woohoo! Illidan & Arthas finally arrived today, aren’t they cute?

I finished reading the second and third part of the Maze Runner trilogy. I really like the world building, how the current dystopian society was formed. The science, and sociology, behind the whole thing is fascinating. I also liked how you could never quite trust anyone. That being said, the books do feel rushed sometimes, and the ending is too easy. I am, hoever, interested enough that I will be reading the prequel sometime in the future.

I also read If I Stay. It’s a good book, well written, good characters and the story is well done. I was a wee bit disappointed, though. This because the story is really a romance and I was expecting a bit more supernatural elements besides the obvious one.

20141007_202529Started watching Resurrection on TV. It’s a show where an eight-year-old, American boy is found wandering in China. After he is returned, he is placed in the temporary case of an immigrations officer. He tries to figure out where the boy is from, and returns to his hometown with him. There, it turns out he is the son of a local couple. The catch, though? He died 30 years ago…

DNA testing and the like proves that he is in fact their son. The rest of the series deals with how the family and the town people (once they find out) deal with this, especially as more resurrected people show up. I find it really interesting, and it features Omar Epps (Dr. Foreman on House) as the immigration cop.

The first season is only 8 or 10 episodes, and they show 2 an evening, so it should only take a few weeks to finish.

Ooh, and miracle of all miracles, Nienke suggested we play a board game, the other day 😀 So we played Rummicub.

Society

Wednesday, July 9, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

426262Hmmm… So I finished Reached, the third book in a dystopian trilogy by Ally Condy. I got the first part, Matched, from Kim when she was clearing out books. I read that last week and I enjoyed it. It reminded me a bit of The Giver by Lois Lowry which is a classic in the dystopian sub-genre. I found the concepts and characters intriguing enough to want to read the next two parts but not enough to warrant buying the paperbacks. So I acquired them in e-book form and read the second part, Crossed, in one day last Saturday. That part suffered from middle-part syndrome quite badly, but not enough to make me quit.

In short, after wars and all those things, a group decided to rebuild society and limit free will and what people can and cannot do to prevent a repeat. The Society has chosen 100 pieces of some art forms that are still allowed to be seen and talked about and stuff (100 paintings, poems, stories and songs). Other than that, there is no art and creativity. People don’t make things, even their writing is copy-pasted phrases on tablets. The Society has data on everything, and everything is sorted and matched and regulated to create the healthiest and most productive people.

People go to school and afterward are given a designated work position. They only have to know what they need for that job and nothing else. So a botanist only knows about plants, a medic only knows about treating people and so on. If one is lucky, they become an Official, one of the people who run things. Children are Matched with their prospective partner when they are 17. This is followed by a strictly regulated courtship until marriage at 21. After which children are expected around age 24 as that is the optimum age for healthy children. And so on.

Cassia, the main character, is in luck. Unlike most cases, she already knows her match, her best friend Xander. This is what the book starts with, the Matching Banquet. But then, when Cassia views the micro chip she’s been given, as per tradition, with info on Xander, she sees a photo of a different boy. It is Ky, another boy from her neighbourhood and friend group. Something like that is not supposed to happen and it leads to doubt in Cassia’s mind about the Match, and the whole process.

When her grandfather dies, because he turns 80 and that is when people die in the Society, he gives Cassia poems. Poems that are not part of the 100. This brings Cassia to further question the Society and with this mind set, she sees more and more things that are off, and realises that art from before the 100 were chosen, as well as other items, are used to trade. Trade for information, but also to trade for passage to other places, beyond the Society’s inner provinces.

Cassia and Ky hang out a lot over the summer as they both chose the same recreational thing to do, hiking. Cassia falls in love with Ky, and then the conundrum of what to do, who to choose, who to believe, who to follow really takes off. The Society notices their association and as Ky is classified as an Abberation, he is eventually taken away.

The second and third books take this further as the Society starts clamping down on things, a revolution brews and Cassia, Ky and Xander must navigate these circumstancces to  find each other, and try and help rebuild a new society and figure out their love triangle. As I said, the second book is not as good. It’s slower and not much happens, but it does give a lot more info and background on the Society and the people that chose to live outside it. About the trade system and about the revolution. The third book is a nice surprise as usually these books end with the overthrowing of the old government and the new dawn rising. But here, the revolution succeeds pretty early in the book. The rest is dedicated to show that even after such an event, things don’t magically fix themselves.

I was a wee bit disappointed in the ending. I had hoped to also learn more about the Otherlands and how the rest of the planet is faring. I understand it is too much for the scope of the story as is, but maybe a short story here or there in the future would be nice. All in all, for people that like dystopian fiction, I would recommend this.
