Messing about

Saturday, September 18, 2010 by Tse Moana 2 Comments

Am messing about with my laptop, looking up all the small loose programs I have on here. Many of them those pre-installed Windows Live things. Like Windows Live Writer. This is a program with which you can write blog posts (for a variety of blog systems, like WordPress, and Blogger and so on) with without having to go to your blog and logging in there.

I wasn’t sure it would work with a self-hosted version of WordPress, but to my surprise, here I am typing a post. Of course, I won’t know for sure until I actually hit publish whether it’ll work or not, but this is promising. Don’t know if I’ll use this more often if it works, because logging in to my Dashboard on the actual website also gives me other options to manage the site. If I’m ever somewhere without internet though, and I do want to blog, this’ll be a nice alternative to Word or Notepad or something. I can write the entire post as I want it to appear, and just save it in the program until I’m back to an internet connection. At least I assume so, I haven’t tried that yet.

In other news, it’s raining. Again. I’m so not ready for autumn yet. I want more summer!

I’m grateful for parents that live one town over and always have room for me to crash there when, oh say, the bus doesn’t go through my town for the weekend, but does through theirs…

I’m happy I found inspiration this week.

I was annoyed with WordPress for not doing what I wanted and it taking forever to figure out where and what the problem was. It’s still not working as I want it, but there’s progress. Also, yesterday I was sad for no reason :S

I learned more bits and pieces of and about WordPress and CSS while messing with the site.

The Problem

Friday, August 20, 2010 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

Since this’ll be auto-fed to Facebook: if any of my FB friends who see this have experience with WordPress and the backend of websites and/or php, please read 🙂

Some more detail on the issue I’ve been having with WordPress. After leaving this website to its own devices for a couple of months, I returned here to continue blogging. This also means I want to update the pages at the top of the blog, and add some new ones.

When I got back, WordPress had an update available to version 3.0.1. I used the auto-update feature in the Dashboard to install this. After posting a shitload of regular blog posts, that all went without a hitch, I went to create the first new page. The 101 in 1001 you see up there ^. I created it as an empty page first, it just said something along the lines of “it’ll be here soon”. I published this page, and that went without problems.

A while later I wanted to edit the page to put the actual content in, and now every time I try to edit that page, it times out on me. I get the dreaded “The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading” thing. Refreshing makes no difference, it just keeps on timing out. Trying to update with less content (the list is rather long) makes no difference either. About this time I noticed posting new pages, in addition to editing existing ones, was also not happening. Even posting blog posts sometimes times out.

Thinking the update hadn’t gone right, I then manually replaced all the files with the updated 3.0.1 files. Still no change. I tried changing the permissions on the post.php file to make it not just read-write-executable by admin, but also read-write-executable for group and public. This didn’t help either, so I changed that back.

So then I hit Google to try and figure this out, however I can’t find anything. Well, I found http://techsalsa.com/solved-404-error-after-update-or-save-post-in-wordpress, it’s somewhat applicable, but that was a couple WP versions ago. That person edited the .htaccess file. I tried both edits described in the link, but no luck.

I also looked through my hosting providers’ FAQ, they mentioned a line [AddHandler x-httpd-php5 .php] to add to the .htaccess file to make php be parsed by PHP 5 (since they have both 4 and 5 installed and supported). Tried that, no luck.

So, here I am, stuck. I’m contacting my hosting provider tomorrow (they’re closed now), to see if it’s something server side, and I’m posting it here to see if there are some bright minds over there who can help me figure it out.

Weekly Four: week 32

I’m grateful it didn’t rain yesterday. My parents had a great time at the Agricultural Day at Verhildersum Museum Estate, and Nienke’s Birthday BBQ approved of the dry weather as well 😀

I’m happy Monkey is so close lately. I think he missed me when I was away last weekend. He’s letting me pet and hold him much more, and is seeking my company (and lap) of his own accord more as well. He’s on my lap as I type this <3

I’m angry with my WordPress. After returning to this site, and updating WP to the newest version, updating pages stopped functioning. And later posting pages stopped working, and now I’m even having trouble posting blog posts. Didn’t find a lot of info on the net, but what there is, is pointing to security issues and .htaccess file edits. So I first had to scour through my hosting provider’s FAQ to figure out 1) if I already had one somewhere (I couldn’t find it in the directory structure) and/or 2) how to edit and where to put it (since hosting provider is not using the standard public_html folder for the site but has named it differently. I think I got it now, we’ll see if this posts, then I probably got it 😀

I learned that draping a string of fake ivy across the top of my window looks neat.

It’s Alive!

So…

I decided it’s kinda ridiculous to be blogging on LiveJournal when I have a perfectly good WordPress installed on my own domain, which I pay for every year. With every post on LJ, I neglected this site more, even though I thought I could use it as a pure photo blog beside the LJ. Using this blog has some other advantages too, since I control every aspect of it, I can customize the site much easier. And, with WordPress I can make pages for the more static content. As you can see above, some of that is functional, some not yet. The 101 list will be copied to the page of the same name and will be updated there (datestamped and all). I will post about accomplishing certain goals and stuff, but for big list overviews, go to the page.

So, with that said, I spent last night one-by-one copying my LJ posts and its comments to here (the importer didn’t work :/ ), inserting them at the right places so they look to be posted on the same dates as I actually posted them. I’ll be making a post on the LJ indicating I’ve moved back here, but I’ll most likely repost certain things back there as well. Notably, the resource posts I mentioned last month. Link collecting for these is coming along nicely, but it’ll be much easier to create these resources here. Here, I’m turning them into pages. Always at the top to be found, no looking around for it, and, with the save draft feature that WordPress has and LJ doesn’t, the creation of these pages will be easier.

The one thing I will miss from LiveJournal is the ability to have different posts have different user icons. I always thought that gives a certain colour to the page, as well as a different glimpse into the personality of the author.

Anyway, that’s all for now. Oh, and sorry to folks who have this site of mine in their feed readers and now got flooded with all the 60 or so posts I copied… Mark as read is your friend 😀

I managed to abandon the blog for another three months, yay me. Not. I don’t know how it happened but one day it was July 9 and I posted and suddenly it’s October 4…

I’ll give a quick rundown of the last three months. Most importantly, new school started. New school is a two-year program to become an elementary school teacher. The program is meant for people who’ve already gotten a diploma or have lots of experience with kids already as it is two years shorter than the regular program.

I follow this program at pabo De Eekhorst in Assen and so far I’m really liking it. The people in my class as well as my mentor/coach are really nice and I’ve learned a lot already in just a few weeks.
I contacted the school assigned to me for practical training yesterday and set up a meeting for coming Monday to discuss which days I’m coming in and which year I’ll train with first.

Then, a little over two months ago, I got a cat. He’s a four-year-old, black and white ex-male with the name Monet. I amended that into Jethro Venantius Monet but just call him Monet.
I got him from the animal shelter on the 24th of July and now it’s as if he’s always been here.
I’ll get some pictures up soon.

Besides that I had my birthday on the 28th; I turned 23. I celebrated with friends that Friday and the Sunday after with my family at my parent’s place as they won’t all fit in my house. I got many very pretty presents including a teapot, a lovely children’s book that was one of my (many) favourites when I was a kid, a concert dvd of Laura Pausini, cat toys and other stuff.

Today is World Animal Day and normally I would usually do something about, get Tessa a present, cuddle Monet extra but, unfortunately for them, I’m going swimming with two of my friends in the really fancy pool on one of those bungalow vacation parks.

Oh, wow. It’s been a while isn’t it… I could’ve sworn I made an entry somewhere half June but apparently I didn’t. Ah well, never mind, Tse’s back.

I’m working on the site again. A CMS, again. This time I’m trying Drupal and from all the ones I’ve tried, I like it best (so far). The adding of content is super-easy and same goes for the creation of menus, which is what was my main problem with other CMSes, I could never get the menus to come out just as I wanted. All I need to do is add some more content and see about changing the default theme to something I like better.

Also, last week I sent in the application for my new school. I already got an e-mail from the coordinator person saying he received it okay and I should be getting a letter with information and all that somewhere this week. Yay!

100

Sunday, March 25, 2007 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

This is the 100th entry on my blog. And in celebration of this number I’ll just say that sometimes it feels really good to stay away from the computer for a few days. I’ll talk to you in more words tomorrow or the day after or something. Have a wonderful day 🙂

Out of Hibernation

Friday, February 23, 2007 by Tse Moana 2 Comments

Floating, soaring, flying
further and further
away from the world.

Falling, gliding, sinking
deeper and deeper
in the comforting dark.

Seductive, enticing
lighter and brighter
the day touches me.

Just some random thoughts to kickstart my freshly awakened brain.

Ugh

*sighs and rubs neck*

I’m going to bed. It’s a quarter to five in the morning and I’ve just about had it.

Remember that post I made, just a few hours before, well I found that some of the stuff I was trying to figure out how to install on the server my site is hosted on is already there. Wheehee! Good for me as just a little later I found I would never have been able to install them myself since my site is hosted and not on my own server.

Anyway, with that out of the way I began installing Coppermine and it worked like a charm from the start. If you now look at the top menu, you’ll see both the Visual and Photography links have gone and have been replaced by a Gallery link. That will load the gallery into the main area.

I have now created all the categories and albums, all that’s left is the time consuming job of uploading all the image files. So far, only Denmark is there. I’m just very glad I no longer need to f*ck around with tables to make more photopages as I had them before.

Another new link in the top menu is the Questions? one. It leads to a page with a few questions about me, the site and stuff I thought someone might be somewhat curious about.

I’m now also looking for some nice application to do some basic news/document management in to deal with the writing I’ve put on here. So far, I’ve looked at several and there are a few that seem promising so it shouldn’t be too long before I’ve installed something.

My end goal is to create a site that will only need the top menu 🙂

Then of course I’ll need to mess around with templates and such to make it all fit together design wise…

Ah well, my bed calls. See ya’ll later.
