Threes

20141218_223827Three cats keeping me company while reading the other day.

Decorated my winter tree (of of the two we’re putting up, Nienke does the other one) yesterday.

And today, Eva, Jarig and Julius came to drop off three cabinets. When they moved into their farm, the previous owners left a lot of stuff behind for them, including a bunch of cabinets, standing in one of the barns.

When I first saw these, I already liked them. At first, since not everything was in place yet, they were using some of them, but Eva mentioned not really liking them. So I asked, if neither Anneke nor Julius wanted them, if I could possibly have them.

A while later, it turned out that (fortunately for me) they didn’t want them either, so I could have them. I am, unfortunately, not in the possession of a driver’s licence or a car big enough to take them, so that was the end of it for a while.

Then Eva called this morning, would it be okay if they came by? Which they then did early afternoon. We carried the cabinets into the garage, where they are to be placed while we live here. They are made of massive wood, and metal shelf-bearers, so they were quite heavy.

I left them there for now, I’ll be cleaning and putting them in place over the weekend.

Nienke sent me these the other day, this is what happens when Milo is whining to go outside, then is allowed to go out but notices the door gets closed behind him. He immediately turns around and wants to come back in 😀

And then after he is back inside, this happens 🙂

So, while we’re on cats, here’s some more pics from this month:

Baaistemaart

Monday, October 13, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

20141013_101337Since I now live in this town, and am free on the day, I figured I should attend the Baaistemaart (lit. Animal Market). It’s a fairly regular annual market, but it specialises in animals. The main street was set apart for the horses, both bigger ponies as well as this collection of Shetlands. Beyond that were normal stands with the usual market stuff both edible and not. On the town square was a tent displaying livestock (sheep, goats, alpacas, rabbits, various forms of guinea pigs, and a collection of birds) and having stands of various organisations, the local vet clinic and so on.

20141013_132654I went with Kim, at first, and later did another round with Mom.

Once home from that, I transported myself to Azeroth for some WoW’ing. With the coming 6.0 patch, Aggem Thorncurse will be replaced as boss in Razorfen Kraul. Which also means that it is no longer possible to tame his boar spirit (which he summons during the fight) that has a unique skin.

I have a lowbie hunter toon that was about level for this dungeon. But not quite enough to be able to do it by himself. And since I’m a stubborn and unsociable bastard, I don’t like doing content with others. So I’ve been leveling him the past few days to get him powerful enough so he and Bokito (his current pet) could get it done. The first time did’t work. I managed to kill Aggem, but the boar only stays up for so long after Aggem dies so after I had healed myself and started the taming, it despawned when I was done and it failed. So I reran the dungeon and this time around started taming right after defeating Aggem and caught it.

Origins

20140922_154713It’s been six months since Murphy died, and I started missing a third cat in this big house. Nienke herself doesn’t (yet) want a new cat, so a little while ago she asked what I thought of a cat for my birthday. Needless to say, I was rather happy 🙂 We then involved my Mom to join in, as sheltercats are still fairly pricey. Since I have a week off now, we decided to go to the shelter on Monday. We could pick out a cat, and he could get used to stuff with me being around for those first few days.

20140922_162736I had in mind a young cat, two or younger. Figured it would be easier to introduce that into the pack.

At the shelter there were a bunch of more special needs cats out and about in one part of the building, and two more, a red and a black one, in a smaller room. The rest were in the cages waiting. After chatting with one of the workers, about the cats present it turned out that basically all young cats are fostered and the ones here are regular adults. I understand that fostering is good for the cats, but it is also hella inconvenient as a lot of foster addresses are in the city or elsewhere and then you have to go there to see the cat. So I figured I check out the ones present, after all, adult cats are fun, too, as evidenced by Monkey who was four when I got him.

20140922_162830One of them was still young, about three, and had just come back from fostering. The worker released that one from the cage so I could watch and interact. I liked her a lot, she was a slinky thing, and seemed interested in the room. She didn’t mind the other cat, the black one, walking around and being interested in her. She didn’t really seem interested in the people, though.

20140922_163607After she was put back in her cage, I checked out the others in the cages. All the while, the black one was calmly moving about, eating, or asking for attention. The red one was sleeping on top of a cat tree and didn’t really seem to care we were there. While checking out the cats, I kept going back to the black one. He was quite calm and loved the attention. His behaviour while the slinky cat was out seemed to indicate he was fine with other cats. He had a bit of a hissy when red cat came down from the tree and got too close (by then it also wanted attention) but otherwise was fine.

Slinky cat, according to the worker, had some notes that she wasn’t always very friendly towards other cats in her foster home, and with the head bumps the black one kept giving me, I chose him.

20140922_185910We took him home, and I put him up in my bedroom. I’d put a litter box there and some food and water, so he had a private place to get used to things. He first spent some time under the bed. I installed myself on the bed to read and get him used to my sounds. He came out for a wee bit to eat and sniff things, then went back under. Later he moved to on top of the bed and he checked out the view from the window sill.

After thinking about it for some time, I named him Captain Blackbeard. Or, in full: Captain Edward “Blackbeard” Teach 🙂

In the evening, I started opening the door a wee bit. Captain was carefully curious from the inside. Monkey ignored it. Milo was carefully curious, and hissy, from the outside. After Monkey and Milo were gone again, I opened the door further and, with a bit of coaxing, he explored the hallway.

20140922_205052At night, he slept on my bed mostly. In the morning, he let me know quite clearly that he was awake, and that he was hungy, and that I should feed him like NOW. Then, I opened the door again, and this time he went out to check on his own.

A little later, I let Monkey and Milo outside for a bit and brough Captain down stairs so he could explore there and get a feel for the scents and the layout. He was a bit apprehensive, but calm and seemed to like it 🙂

Toy Animals

RudolphI bought this stuffed reindeer head the other day, part of the early get-ready-for-christmas display in the store. I have to keep it somewhere in the mean-time, though, so I hung it from my clothes hook. It fits the room a lot better than I thought it would, I might keep it there instead of moving it downstairs when the holidays are upon us.

We also watched the dogs of Nienke’s brother the other day, a pair of yappy, over-enthusiastic chihuahuas. I love dogs, but I’ll never be a fan of chihuahuas. I prefer my dogs LARGE and furry.  They can be amusing, though, the wee ones.PicsArt_1410111447285

Lines II: Mother Earth

Sunday, July 20, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

Been spending time expanding my genealogy some more. Trying to go back further than I already am. It is proving more and more difficult, though, as I’m firmly in the territory where names are repeated all over the place, there are very few reliable surnames and registration of events is sketchy at best.

I also started drawing again. I picked up another of my curved line sketches from 2012 or so to finish. This one is called Lines II: Mother Earth. It was coloured on the 18th and 19th, I think about 7 hours or so together.

Lines II: Mother Earth

Watched some movies on Friday with Kim and Nienke, Accepted and Not Another Happy Ending. They were fun.

Today Ingrid came by. Ostensibly to borrow my tent, but also because it was an excellent idea to drink tea, chat and play games. So we played UWO, Settlers of Catan and Blue Moon.

After she had left, a storm came by, and along with it, a refugee in the house: a small from. It hipped across and around the kitchen before I managed to grab it and release it outside. Milo was quite intrigued with the hoppy little thing.

10487352_10152212417388155_8690560781008930102_nThe chain lock on my bike is going to hell on the fast track. I’ve already had a couple times I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get it to unlock. So this morning I borrowed Mom’s bike. I then, a little later in the morning, texted her to ask if she could go to the store for me and buy me a new one of the same type as my old one which I left in the shed as an example. She said ok.

This evening after work I headed over there to pick the new lock up. When I entered the courtyard at the back of their building, I found Monkey wandering there. He came running when he saw me, so I picked him up and took him inside. He was a bit squirmy so I figured I take the elevator instead of walking up. He didn’t like the elevator very much. Its a rather noisy one, so I ended up with some nailprints in my shoulders 😀

Upstairs I had to put him down for a bit while I unlocked my Parents’ door and he sniffed around a bit. Once inside, he meticulously explored every inch of the place, stopping every couple yards to meow loudly. Eventually, he settled down and decided the carpet was a good spot for a rest. Shortly after that, we left again. We managed to make him walk with me down the stairs, even though he wanted to sniff everything. I then carried him home.

I think the whole visit took maybe 20 minutes, but it was funny 😀

A Week in the Life [+ The Normal Heart]

Sunday, June 8, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

The_Normal_Heart_PosterI came home Tuesday to a new edition of Flow on the door mat as well as next season’s theater catalog. After the first run through, I was on 9 shows I wanted to see.

My Uncle’s birthday was Wednesday so went there in the afternoon.

BphOiMBIUAAKrBFThen Thursday I had planned to go see The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared after work, but it rained so much I decided against it. Instead I went to the Bruna at the train station and bought books (including The Ocean at the End of the Lane, by Neil Gaiman). Once home, I watched The Normal Heart (I had recorded it when it premiered on HBO Sunday).

It’s a movie, after the play of the same name, about the beginning of the AIDS crisis in New York City in the early 80’s. Main character is the, gay, writer Ned Weeks. As more and more people around him get ‘gay cancer’ and die from it, he notices that mainstream medicine and the government choose to look the other way. He and his friends form Gay Men’s Health Crisis, an advocacy group to raise awareness and money and help those affected and afflicted by the disease. Ned favours a more aggressive, vocal approach which conflicts with the more diplomatic way the rest of his friends choose. Meanwhile, in his personal life, he falls in love with journalist Felix. The two start a relationship, but then Felix gets AIDS as well.

It is a difficult movie to watch. It is raw and deep and open, quite literally like a festering wound. It is beautiful, intensely fragile and strong at the same time. Watching it left me devastated and in pieces. I will be watching it again, and I will definitely be buying the blu ray when it’s released. And I only buy blu rays of movies I really, really, love.

BpiZrDqCYAA20dX

Saturday: Lounging on the bed with Milo 🙂

The Normal Heart stars Mark Ruffalo as Ned, Matt Bomer as Felix and has, among other, Jim Parsons, Julia Roberts, Jonathan Groff and Alfred Molina in it.

Friday I went to the cinema with Kim to see Maleficent. I liked the movie. The visuals were very pretty, and the back story they gave for Maleficent was nice. The acting was okay to good. Angelina Jolie was good, as was the guy playing her lackey. But the dude playing the king sported the most awful fake Scottish accent. And later on, in a scene at his castle, all of a sudden mid-scene half the men there acquired the same horrible accent… And the ending felt rather rushed.

Back home, I went through the the theater catalog again. Got it down to 7… But am talking with Mom about going to see War Horse in January…

Saturday I played a lot of Warcraft, and I read The Ocean at the End of the Lane. It’s a lovely, lovely book. It tells the story of a little boy who meets the people who live at the end of the lane, the Hempstocks. And there is something odd about this family. There are no men, and they have an ocean in the garden. And then an old evil manages to enter this world, and he needs the Hempstocks to survive. It has magic and supernatural stuff and all those things you find under the veneer of modern day life (well, modern day sixties life). It is definitely a recommended read.

Also,  the new birthday calendar I ordered to hang in the downstairs toilet came. Unfortunately packed, but very, very, pretty 🙂
