The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway

Thursday, January 16, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

Tuesday I went to the movies with Gert. We saw Frozen. It is one of the awesomest movies I’ve seen in a long time. I’m already a fan of Disney movies (particularly animated) but I love this one so much. I watched it again yesterday and am waiting for it to be released on bluray 😀

Yesterday, my bed also came. I bought it late december, but with the holidays and all my room wasn’t ready for it. So they stored it for a while longer until I made an appointment to have it delivered yesterday. It didn’t go quite as I expected. Turns out that, it being a boxspring, the bottom is one giant piece. The only separate things about it are the mattress and the headboard…

So now it stands in the hallway, shuffled in a corner fenced in by a cabinet and the coat rack 😀 I first need to finish upstairs, and then get some help to move it up the stairs.

Blog About Me [5/52] Ten Songs I Love

Monday, July 15, 2013 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

In no particular order, these are all songs that move me deeply. Mainly through the lyrics, but they would obviously not be the same without the music.

Fort Atlantic – Let Your Heart Hold Fast

Defying Gravity from Wicked, as sung by Chris Colfer on Glee

Omnia – The Raven

I See The Light from Tangled, sung by Mandy Moore & Zachary Levi

Lene Marlin – Flown Away

Leonard Cohen – Anthem

Evanescence – Imaginary

Omnia – Old Man Tree

Empty Chairs at Empty Tables from Les Misérables as sung by Eddie Redmayne in the 2013 movie

Ronan Keating – I Hope You Dance

100 Things That Make Me Happy [1/10]

Saturday, May 5, 2012 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

What with the dour weather today, here’s the first installment of my 100 Things blog thing.

1. Sitting at the edge of a body of water, with the sun on my shoulders and my feet dangling in the water.

I was thinking about recent years the other day and this one summer day popped into my head. I wasn’t sure when it was, but I remembered myself and Eva and Nienke, sitting along the canal, our feet in the water, enjoying the sun. I knew I had pictures of this, I remember them, too. Unfortunately, twenty minutes of going through my photo folders later, I still haven’t found those. I do have, however, unearthed a video of that day. Just a short 30 second clip of the three of us. I think we’re discussing summer clothes.

2. The smell of freshly mowed grass.

I love living around a big field of grass. Every time the county’s gardening people show up to mow it I detest them for it since they also come early and use a little tractor type mower that makes a lot of noise and wakes me up. But the smell afterwards more than makes up for it 🙂

3. My cats.

Monkey’s a cat with a definite attitude, but at the same time he can be such a love bug. Tonight he spent a few hours sleeping on my lap, clearly showing the trust he has in me. He was so far gone in sleep he even turned over and showed me his pretty belly, which he almost never does.

Milo makes me smile with with his playing (something Monkey never really does). I love how he enthusiastically plays soccer with various cat toys until he bats it under something where he can’t get at it so he sits down and looks at it with this puzzled expression until I grab the toy for him.  And his high pitched squeeky voice always makes me chuckle. Miew!

4. Lying comfortably outside, in the grass, with my eyes closed, in the spring sun, with just a touch of lukewarm wind.

Related to the first point, there’s just something so relaxing, and safe, about lying there and letting spring invade my senses.

5. Books.

I can’t live without books. It’s that simple. They feed my mind, my imagination, my dreams, my ambitions. They are wings and an anchor, a window and a door, friend and family. They help me make sense of the world, and they allow me to escape; whether it’s a one off that I’ll read once and might have forgotten a year later or an instant classic to me that will stick with me forever.

6. Waking up and realising you don’t have to go anywhere or do anything, you can just lie there and BE.

I love being able to enjoy the quiet and avoid the world for a while in the morning. Especially when it’s early enough that the sun is still coming up. You can hear (and see) the world wake up.

7. Floating in water.

Best mediation style, ever. One of my dreams is to have a house with a small pool (or a giant ass bathtub) that I can float in. It just has to be big enough that I don’t touch the edges and I’ll be perfectly happy.

8. The smell of spiced meat cooking.

I love most foods during cooking, but there’s just something about the combination of meat and herbs/spices together as they cook (or better yet, roast). If they made air freshener in this smell, I’d buy it 😀

9. Cake.

I looooove cake. Of all the more sweet desserts and treats, cake is by far my favourite. Especially layer cakes with cream or whatnot in between. Some of my favourites are Schwarzwalder kirsch cake, nougatine meringue cake, lemon cheesecake or basic cheesecake with strawberry topping.

10. Being taken care of by my mom when I’m sick.

Obviously the being sick part itself does not make me happy, in fact in tends to piss me off. However, whenever I’m really sick, I prefer to hang out at the parent’s place because just being around Mom while she does her normal things and such takes me back to childhood and makes me feel better much faster.

Some ALGBTQ Internet Finds

Tuesday, November 23, 2010 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

November 20 was Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Science has discovered that by turning off one single gene, the ovaries of mice turned into testes. If this is something they can eventually use in/with/for humans as well it would pave the way for easier gender reassignment than the surgeries that are now needed. Read the article here.

About gender identity, how about identifying as Fabulous? 🙂

In an interview, Project Runway’s Tim Gunn recently came out as asexual, sort of. He doesn’t seem to fully see it as an/his orientation, but it is nice to have an asexual famous face. Quotes from the interview he did to be found here.

“In my twenties, I was madly in love with the same man for almost a decade. It was fabulous. [Then] one night he told me he’d been sleeping around. I could hardly breathe from grief, humiliation and despair. Much of my boyfriend’s “I’m over this” was about sex. I’ve always been kind of asexual. That breakup was a cold shower to last a lifetime.”

“When people hear I haven’t had a boyfriend since 1982, they often whisper, “Does he not have sex?” That’s right! Could I get Psychiatric help? Probably. It’s a little late.”

He’s also written a book, Gunn’s Golden Rules, which Gray Lady reviews here. Here’s another quote, this one from his book. I’m getting really curious about it now, I might have to go and read it.

“Sometimes people ask me when I figured out that I was gay. Well, for a very long time, I didn’t know what I was. I knew what I wasn’t: I wasn’t interested in boys, but I really wasn’t interested in girls. A lot of it was denial, but it was also that I didn’t feel unsatisfied. I’ve always loved working and have made that my priority. For many years, I described myself as asexual, and that’s probably still closest to the truth.”

Some videos to end with:

When Did You Choose To Be Straight?

The Trevor Project has been making a lot of It Gets Better videos as shout outs to LGBTQ youth who are getting bullied and harassed on a daily basis, to let them know that it will get better. Pixar has made a heartwarming video of their employees talking about their struggles, and how it does get better.

Today is a Good Day

Saturday, November 6, 2010 by Tse Moana 3 Comments

I feel good, happy and at peace and stuff like that. I’ve tidied up, re-arranged my books a bit so they fit better in the available space, vacuumed and just went to the store. A nice, balanced day of doing stuff, instead of a flying-all-over-the-place day or a sit-on-my-ass-and-do-nothing-at-all day 😀 (Although I now do have my standard vacuuming head ache :/)

Bought pears and apples to make stuff with tomorrow and next week and a bunch of grapes to take with me to work on the irregular shifts. And since I was quite proud of myself for actually vacuuming today instead of pushing it away again and again, I rewarded myself by buying a cake. It’ll be a delayed reward since it needs to defrost, but it should be ready to eat tonight. Yum!

This week was mostly a good week too, was a bit tired on occasion, but felt good on the whole. Slowly getting used to the time change, but early evenings still completely derail me. I’m continuously misjudging the time and get grouchy at the early dark. Fortunately the mornings aren’t as dark yet.

Met Gert on Wednesday for our usual belated mutual birthday hanging out and gift exchange. I’d bought him a pretty  book, but he couldn’t choose so we went shopping to find me a present. No fun Star Trek things to be found, so we headed for the regular book store. Finally decided on E.E. Knight’s Dragon Champion, and Trudi Canavan’s The High Lord. I’ve read the last one, but I didn’t have it yet, and I hate unfinished series in my bookcase. Plus, they’re awesome books, so this makes a re-read easier, too.

Afterward we hit the shops for some clothes. Gert was successful, but I didn’t find anything (except a new hat). I wanted to get some t-shirts at V&D, but they didn’t have them anymore. Shortly after, Gert had to go. I had a last hour to kill before my train would go, so decided to check out the H&M Man. Their basement has the best accessories. There I came across very nice sweaters with the Ghostbusters logo, and they were only €29,95.  Together with some heavily discounted ties (one with colourful dogs, and a pink/purple striped one), my mission was successful after all.

And, suprise, surprise, earlier today Gert called. He was in Utrecht at the V&D and they did have the shirts I wanted there! So he bought two shirts for me, and we’ll exchange later this week. Yay!

Also, finally new Glee again this Tuesday. I thought there’d be a new episode right the week after the Rocky Horror Glee Show, so I was all set last week and then nothing 🙁

But! Mash-ups next week, and Kurt’s new (possible boy)friend!

Glee

Sunday, October 10, 2010 by Tse Moana 4 Comments

I discovered the TV show Glee earlier this week. I’m half way through the first season now, and I’m in love. I’ve always had a soft spot for musicals and such, going back to Mary Poppins and the Sound of Music, but also newer things like Sweeney Todd or Disney musical films like The Lion King, so when I finally read somewhere what the plot of Glee was (I had heard of it before) I was intrigued. Some quick internet later, I was watching the first episode and I’ve not been able to get it out of my head since 😀

I love that most of the songs that are done in the show are also released, I’ve been listening to all the songs in between watching the episodes and have found several new additions to my favourites list already. Songs like Take a Bow, Bust Your Windows, the It’s My Life/Confessions Mash-up, but, the one that really stole my heart was Defying Gravity. I’d never heard that song before, but when I heard the version that Chris Colfer, who plays Kurt, sang, I was sold. The song’s been stuck in my head ever since.

Edited to add: Also, it’s not just the music part of the song I love, but the lyrics are great as well, the whole going-for-it, not-letting-anything-stop-me thing.

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I’m through with playing by the rules
Of someone else’s game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes: and leap!

It’s time to try
Defying gravity
I think I’ll try
Defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye
I am defying gravity
And you wont bring me down!

I’m through accepting limits
”cause someone says they’re so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I’ll never know!
Too long I’ve been afraid of
Losing love I guess I’ve lost

Well, if that’s love
It comes at much too high a cost!

I’d sooner buy
Defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye
I’m defying gravity
I think I’ll try
Defying gravity
And you wont bring me down!
