Lines II: Mother Earth

Sunday, July 20, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

Been spending time expanding my genealogy some more. Trying to go back further than I already am. It is proving more and more difficult, though, as I’m firmly in the territory where names are repeated all over the place, there are very few reliable surnames and registration of events is sketchy at best.

I also started drawing again. I picked up another of my curved line sketches from 2012 or so to finish. This one is called Lines II: Mother Earth. It was coloured on the 18th and 19th, I think about 7 hours or so together.

Lines II: Mother Earth

Watched some movies on Friday with Kim and Nienke, Accepted and Not Another Happy Ending. They were fun.

Today Ingrid came by. Ostensibly to borrow my tent, but also because it was an excellent idea to drink tea, chat and play games. So we played UWO, Settlers of Catan and Blue Moon.

After she had left, a storm came by, and along with it, a refugee in the house: a small from. It hipped across and around the kitchen before I managed to grab it and release it outside. Milo was quite intrigued with the hoppy little thing.

Captain Colour

Wednesday, July 2, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

Right, so I’m part of a pen pal club, the League of Extraordinary Pen Pals. And every month there’s a newsletter with, among other things, a member spsotlight. And a little while ago Julie, one of the fearless leaders of the club, approached me if I wanted to be it for this July’s newsletter. Of course I said yes ๐Ÿ™‚

The kicker? It comes with a portrait drawing ๐Ÿ˜€ In the club we all have a superhero name, and mine is Captain Colour. So after sending in my interview answers, and give some colour choices, here’s my fabulous portrait by the talented Ciara Barsotti.

Captain Colour by Ciara Barsotti

For completeness, the interview.

Why are you called Captain Colour?

I’m a very visual person, I love visual texture and most of all colours and how they work. Like looking at a painting up close and seeing all the brush strokes and the different pigments and the relief of the paint on the canvas and then as you walk further back it smooths out and becomes a recognisable image. Colour is so versatile a colour change can change the mood and atmosphere of something completely. Paint a wall in a room red, and the vibe will be completely different than if you painted it blue, or green or… or… I also love to colour things. Both in doing paintings and drawings but also colouring books. And I love rainbows, too. But Captain Rainbow didn’t quite have the same ring to it ๐Ÿ˜€

What are your superhero penpal strengths?

I’m always decorating the stationery and envelope, especially with stickers. I like it when the recipients not only have something fun to read, but also to look at. I sometimes try to match the decorating to what I think my pal will like. But I do more often tend to go with just what I like, and hope my pal will like it, too. It’s an addition to the letter, another way to get to know me and who I am and what I like.

What is your superhero kryptonite?

Stickers! And pretty paper in all shapes and sizes and textures. And colouring books. Especially those Dover historic ones like time periods, or period fashions.

Do you use any special weapons while fighting crime?

Pens. A whole belt of pointy pens, ready to throw at any criminal crossing my path. Plus a surplus of ribbon and string to tie them up.

Who is your arch-nemesis and why?

Time. I never have enough time for all the things I want to do. Plus I’m somewhat of a procrastinator, too. Which is so not an ideal combination :S

What does your superhero lair look like?

Big, with lots of nooks and crannies and oodles of built in storage. Shelves, drawers, baskets, all neatly labelled and sorted. Several tables for all different kinds of projects and windows looking out all around over fields and wide landscapes. *dreams on*

In real life, though, my lair is a still fairly large room, with shelves and drawers holding all my crafty stuff. Book shelves for the non-fiction and reference books (fiction lives in the living room), a work table where I write letters and do crafts and where my laptop usually lives so also the place I write other things and play games and so on. There’s another (old) table for projects that are at risk of damaging the furniture like modding water/toy guns into steampunk/scifi things and so on.

How do you relax after a long day of saving the world?

Books mainly, they are my life’s blood. Other than that, cuddling my cats ๐Ÿ™‚ Also making/editing things or playing games on the iPad and the computer.

What kind of penpal are you?

A somewhat slow one. Referring back to my arch-nemesis above, I try to reply speedily, but there will often be a few weeks in between receiving a letter and having a reply ready to mail out. I want to stress, though, this does not mean I don’t want to write anymore, or don’t like you, I’m just not that fast ๐Ÿ™‚ Once we’re corresponding, though, I am loyal. It might take me a while to reply, but I will reply.

Are you open to new superhero penpals? If so, what types & how can they reach you?

I’m always open to new pals, as long as they keep the above in mind ๐Ÿ™‚ I am in the database with my interests (they are legion but include books, cats, scifi/fantasy, geeky stuff, mythology, language, nature/animals, spirituality, sociology, tv/movies and so on) and I also have a postable (www.postable.com/erikmulder)

In your opinion, what is the best thing about being part of the League of Extraordinary Penpals?

I love the inclusiveness. We accept each other’s quirks and oddities and we’re always there for each other in good times and bad. Plus we don’t make fun of our members for what they do and like. specially as a dude, often people look at you funny when you say you like crafting and making pretty things and so on. But here, it is embraced, and I think it shows in the influx of more guys into our ranks. So keep being awesome everyone!

Rottumeroog and The Fault in Our Stars

Tuesday, June 17, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

BqP3CsrCQAADxFFYesterday at work I was looking out the window when I noticed they were building something down at square in front of the station. As more of us saw it, we were stumped as to what is wasย as we are far enough away that we couldn’t make it out. I did say it reminded me of National Geographic, but other than that, we got nothing.

Naturally curious that I am, I decided to go down there in my lunch and check it out. Which is when I found out that it was, in fact, National Geographic who put it there. It was a photo exposition of photos taken on the wild island of Rottumeroog by photographer Jasper Doest. It will be there until July 27, go see! It’s beautiful.

Today I had the day off because I switched my shift (so I’m working tomorrow). I spent the morning in bed reading The Fault in Our Stars. It’s a very good book, very moving. I’m looking forward to the movie!

Tonight I watched Elysium on TV. It was worse than I expected.

Rijksmuseum

Monday, April 14, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

april13-1Yesterday I went to the Rijksmuseum with Gert, Nico and Jeroen. Not last Christmas, but the one before, we all got free tickets to the new Rijksmuseum in our Christmas package at work. The tickets were valid for a long time, but last weekend were the final dates. So, with great pain and cursing of the lords of Traffic, we managed to set a the date for yesterday. Jeroen had lost his ticket, but since they were 2 people per ticket, that wasn’t a problem and allowed me to ask Gert along.

We left Groningen with the 7:30 train, picking Jeroen & Nico up along the way, and arriving in Amsterdam a little after ten. With the additional tram time we made it to the museum around 11. We made a preliminary selection of which bits we definitely wanted to see and set ourselves to wander around. It was awesome. I took pictures here and there of the pieces that resonated with me most, but mainly just looked with my real eye and not the camera. Saw the Nightwatch, which was smaller in length than I had thought, and took an obligatory selfie ๐Ÿ˜€

We made it through in a lot less time than I had thought. After wandering around the museumshop (and buying a small guide book, two notepads, stamps and a tote to carry it in) we were back outside around 3.

We headed to a cafe nearby for lunch but the service was so horrible that we didn’t stick around long. It took ages to get service, then it took ages for our drinks to arrive. And when we had finished those, the lunch menu that they would “bring shortly” was still nowhere in sight. So we decided to leave, their loss. No one was paying any attention, we probably could have left without paying. Fortunately for them, we’re too nice. So I tackled a random waiter hanging out near the edge so we could pay. He would go get someone… This went slightly quicker than the other waits, but still…

We decided to take the tram back, Gert and I very badly wanted to go to the American Book Center ๐Ÿ˜€ Which we did. Scored five books and could’ve hung out there for much longer, but we needed food by now. The others had eaten something from a nearby market, but I wasn’t so lucky. From there, we walked back towards the station, stopping along the way at a McDonalds for some food.

I’ll post some of the pics later this week after I’m done editing.

Craft it Forward

Monday, October 22, 2012 by Tse Moana 1 Comment

Earlier this month one of my friends on Facebook posted a photo of some very cute crafts she had received from someone. They were sent to her as part of a Craft it Forward Project. Craft it Forward is based on the idea of Pay it Forward: you make something for other people, and they then make something for other people, who then make something for other people and so on.

I immediately took to the idea. It combines some of the things I like best: getting mail, sending mail, making stuff, and giving people things. So, I signed up at Signe’s post and last week I received my package.

Signe is immensely creative and talented and I love what she made. From left to right there’s a tag with the letter R on it, an empty envelop to put things in (with a beautiful sticker on the back to close it with), a flag of (I think) washi tape, a magnet with Signe’s horse on it, some clay beads to decorate (or keep as is, I think for now I prefer them like this) and a drawing/colouring page.

I’m always especially enamoured with Signe’s drawing skills so I think I’ll have to find me a pretty frame to put it in.

After receiving this, it is now my turn to make something for other people. I already have some ideas of what I want to make. A general shape or outline, but the nuance will depend on who signs up for this. I maintain the sign up at my Facebook because that’s where I have more people, plus the ease of tagging them. And besides, it’s not as if more than a handful of people actually ever comments here.

Once the people are known, and the packages sent I will post photos of what I made and my process.

Celebrate! (Nienke’s Birthday Drawing)

Tuesday, August 14, 2012 by Tse Moana 5 Comments

I also made a drawing for Nienke’s birthday in the style of Connected. It has the same basic shape with the focal circle in the middle and the detail panels surrounded by a knotwork border.

I decided to do a drawing after Nien expressed how much she liked Connected. I chose to put a Tree of Life in the middle, with Murphy (her cat) below, except I exagerrated him a bit into a lion so he could also represent her astrological sign.

The panels show various things that are important to Nienke or mean something to her. Below is her name and date of birth. The border features knotwork in blue, which is her favourite colour.

Celebrate!: the process

As I was colouring more and more, I realised the colouring of the letters was off. I wasn’t sure what to do with it at first. For a second I even despaired the thing might be ruined. But then I found my silver marker and realised that would be perfect.

Celebrate!: details.

Celebrate!: final result, framed

Excuse some of the glare, silver marker doesn’t photograph well in evening indoor light.

Connected

Saturday, August 11, 2012 by Tse Moana 1 Comment

The nameless Pagan thing is done, and has a name. It is called Connected. Here’s pictures of the process and the end result.

Connected halfway done

Connected: Fire corner

Connected: Air corner

Connected Earth corner

Connected: Water corner

Connected: the end result

Excuse the somewhat crappy quality of the last picture, I hadn’t realised the shot wasn’t very good before now.

Knotwork

Sunday, July 29, 2012 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

Here’s some pictures of Lines III: Dreamscape.

Lines III: Dreamscape (WIP Composite)

Lines III: Dreamscape (Final)

After inking the water painted result I added some more drawings of various pop culture related things that are meaningful to me. See if you can find (and identify) them all?

The last few days I’ve been burying myself into deciding what symbolism and decoratives to use for my latest drawing (which is, as of yet, nameless). It’s fun, I’ve never spent this much time in research for a drawing before ๐Ÿ™‚

So far I’m going on a bit of a Celtic/Norse path with one or two Greek influences. I’ve been practicing making knotwork for the border. As long as I stick to fairly simple designs, it goes pretty well. I’ve only made two mistakes and I think I can hide them once I start colouring.ย The design continues through the corners, but is mostly covered up by triskeles that I’m putting up there.

The circle in the middle is not getting just a simple circle frame. Instead I’m turning it into Ouroboros/Jormungandr. At the top I’m placing a Goddess/God symbol by combining the triple moon with the horned sun to end up with a circle and three sickle shapes at the sides and top.

The little space that is left between the border and the circle will be filled up with various symbols that have meaning within Paganism (elements, pentagrams, spirals, labyrinths) with possibly some specific additional ones such as Mjolnir or Ankh. It depends on how I feel about it once the border and the middle are both inked and I have a better sense of the left over space.

Nameless Pagan Thing (First Sketch)

Extra sketches to decide on the borders and way of filling

Pencil

Tuesday, July 24, 2012 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

I’m really enjoying the pencil and paper spirit that has taken hold of me. Lines III: Dreamscape is mostly finished. I coloured it with water colour pencils, then painted over that with water and inked the lines with a fine liner (picture later, they’re still on my phone). I’m considering watering it once more, but not sure yet.

As for Lines II: Earth Mother, I’m not sure yet what medium to use. I know the colours (earth tones and/or element colours), but haven’t decided whether I want to use pencils, water colour pencils, paint, crayons or even felt tips. I’m just going to let that stew for a bit, I’m sure the Mother will let me know once she has decided what her medium should be.

Tonight, as I was browsing through some of the paganism/witchcraft blogs/tumblrs I have in my Google reader I was suddenly hit by an image in my head that I knew I had to draw immediately. So I put the laptop aside, sat down at the table and sketched the image. Just to get the idea on paper so I can properly work on it once there’s actual day light. It only took a few minutes, but I’m already so full of what I’m gonna do with it, mostly in terms of edges and decorations around it. The middle image is a circle with two humanoid figures embracing each other in it. Seeing the context of what I was doing when I saw the image in my head, I’m going to assume they are supposed to be the God and Goddess. I tend to take my pantheons in the Celtic and Norse tastes (with some Egyptian thrown in occasionally), so I think there will be lots of influences from those directions. The circle itself gets a very simple edge, the people take up all the space and are the focus so the circle edge is to frame them, not to detract from them.

For the rest, I’m thinking a border along the edges of the paper, with some connector pieces in the corners and background nature-type things in the space between the border and the circle.

Pictures later, it is too dark now.

I <3 inspiration, and I love it even more when it intersects with my paganism. ๐Ÿ™‚

More Squiggly Lines

Saturday, July 14, 2012 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

I finished the Squiggly drawing from last post, took me about 7,5 hours total. I really like how it turned out, and it inspired me to take this tubular, colourful, enthusiastic form further. I named this work Lines I: Tubular and today I’ve been sketching Lines II: Mother Earth and Lines III: Dreamscape. I haven’t decided yet if I’m gonna use the same method of colouring them (aka just regular pencils) or if I want to use, for example, aquarel pencils or even paint or markers.
