Ingrid

Of Milestones and Merriment

Sunday, July 27, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

Ingrid Prezzie20140726_134020Dear Ingrid turned 30 yesterday, so we had a celebration!

Nienke and I gave her a gift certificate to go to the movies with us to Step Up 5 and Begin Again with a cute candle holder and a giamt clothespin to hold notes and stuff. I’d also made an elaborate slideshow with photos from our history, back to early high school when we met all through the years, festuring her and our friend group. Nienke then put a lovely score behind it. Unfortunately the music wouldn’t play on the laptop when it was shown 🙁

There was also a pub quiz, expertly put together by Bas & Mellien. I was mighty pleased when my team won 🙂

Then there was talk and laughter and tasty food and a round of Guess Who? to top the evening off.

Hot Knife through Butter

Thursday, July 24, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

SpidermanLast month the League of Extraordinary PenPals had a swap wherein partners each had to buy a puzzle, write a letter on the back, scramble the pieces and mail it off.

Yesterday, my puzzle arrived, all the way from the USA. I built it today and it is: Spider-Man (which, for the record, I think is a dumb way of writing his name).

Yesterday it was also time for my three-weekly shot of testosterone. As usual I cycled to the clinic to see my GP for this. But this time, it was different. As agreed upon the last time around, today was going to be the first time I would do it myself.

I’ve seen him do it since December, so I was pretty sure I got the mechanics down. Of course, in practice a first time is always clumsy as you don’t know the feel of it. I started by breaking the vial so I could suck up the liquid. The vial is tougher than it looks (fortunately). But as long as I remember to keep the black dot at the back, and break towards me, the top pops off just like that.

Then there was finger acrobatics as I held the vial between two fingers and the syringe between two more so I could use my other hand to actually pull up the plunger.

With that done, I sat down, found my thigh muscle, hesitated only briefly and stuck it in. It went in like a hot knife through butter. Smooth, easy and painless. As I hoped it would 🙂

After pulling back a little to check if I hadn’t speared a blood vessel, I slowly injected the T into my body. Since the liquid is so viscous, you have to take your time to do it slow.

Afterwards I spent the rest of the day making something for Ingrid’s upcoming 30th birthday and watched movies (City of Ember, The Hunters, Zathura and Inkheart) and caught the latter half of The Patience Stone, a really good movie with Golshifteh Farahani playing the main character whose husband gets shot and becomes a vegetable. She remains in their war-torn village to take care of him. As he is unresponsive, she just talks to him and tells him of her days, and slowly she starts telling him her feelings and secrets. He becomes her patience stone, a thing from legend that one can say all their unhappiness to until it is soaked through and explodes, freeing the person from sorrow.

Lines II: Mother Earth

Sunday, July 20, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

Been spending time expanding my genealogy some more. Trying to go back further than I already am. It is proving more and more difficult, though, as I’m firmly in the territory where names are repeated all over the place, there are very few reliable surnames and registration of events is sketchy at best.

I also started drawing again. I picked up another of my curved line sketches from 2012 or so to finish. This one is called Lines II: Mother Earth. It was coloured on the 18th and 19th, I think about 7 hours or so together.

Lines II: Mother Earth

Watched some movies on Friday with Kim and Nienke, Accepted and Not Another Happy Ending. They were fun.

Today Ingrid came by. Ostensibly to borrow my tent, but also because it was an excellent idea to drink tea, chat and play games. So we played UWO, Settlers of Catan and Blue Moon.

After she had left, a storm came by, and along with it, a refugee in the house: a small from. It hipped across and around the kitchen before I managed to grab it and release it outside. Milo was quite intrigued with the hoppy little thing.

Ascension Day Market + Choppers

Thursday, May 29, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

As per our tradition, Ingrid came today to go to the annual Ascension Day Market in Eenrum with me and Nienke. And this year, we added Kim to the mix. We had tea first, and then drove  to Eenrum. And since my aunt and uncle still live there, we had the luxury of parking the car in their driveway which saved us walking all the way from the designated parking area.

I succeeded in my goal, which was to find a mat for the downstairs toilet. It is a lovely dark purple and goes well with the colour scheme I have going on in there 🙂

Other than that, we saw Mellien and Bas, bought candy and I indulged in buying sausages.

When we got back we played some games. Ingrid and I played a couple games of Fluxx, and then we did Therapy with the four of us.

In between, I cast my vote for the Horde bike in the Azeroth Choppers bike build. I am a dedicated Alliance player ( I have a few Horde characters, but no higher level than 20), but the Alliance bike is just too low in the back for me. The winning bike will be put in the game for free, but I have no doubt the other one will be made available in some way as well. There will be too much of a shitstorm if they don’t.

Friday was the last workday before having a glorious week off. After work I hit Blokker to get some birthday/housewarming presents for Eva, Jarig and Feije. They’d all had their birthday in the last two months, but with moving, it was bad timing to celebrate. So they were doing a party now. I found them a cute little step ladder-like thing to put plants on, as well as some paper lanterns and for Feije I had a book I’d chanced upon earlier this year.

Saturday I met Ingrid in the city so we could drive to Eva’s. There we helped set up the garden for the party carrying tables, chairs, the BBQ and assorted food stuffs around. The rest of the guests arrived near the end of the afternoon. It was a great party, good people, good conversations, good atmosphere and good food. When it got really dark we unleashed our inner pyromaniacs and built a fire. It was far past midnight when we finally abandoned it.

We stayed the night and camped out on the sofa’s in the living room. I didn’t sleep too well, but I’ll blame that on the crappy synthetic sleeping bag and sticking to the leather sofa 😀

The next morning we got woken up pretty early because the kid of the other couple staying over was awake. So we switched and took their bed so they could stay in the living room. Finally got out of bed around 9ish. We helped put away the tables and chairs and then breakfasted with the remainders of the bread and herb butter and cream cheese from the night before. Ingrid and I left shortly after noon to go home so I could catch the 13:22 train.

All in all, it felt like a weekend away. It was so fun and relaxing. I’m up for a repeat 😀

Gone With the Wind

Wednesday, April 9, 2014 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

gonewiththewindYesterday I started at Webcare. Spent the day watching various people work to get a feel for the systems and the work. Today I actually got to do work. Since I’d done it before it was very well doable. I mostly did the stuff I knew and picked up questions about other departments as I went along. I don’t know as much about them as my “home” department, but that’ll come with time. I’m excited, it’s gonna be fun.

After work today, I met up with Ingrid for a night out. I’d bought tickets to a musical theater piece based on Gone With the Wind a month or two ago on a whim. I asked Ingrid if she wanted to come along, and she did. We ate at Satéhuis (yum!) and then headed for the theater.

The stage was fairly sparsely set. A piano on the left, cotton bales along the back and sides, and a sort pyramid-like thing with a giant metal horse on it on the right side. Since the film is rather long (I never read the book) I was expecting them to whirlwind through parts and that they did. The main narrator of the story was Mammy. She spoke about Scarlett and told her life’s story, where the key parts where then played out. The story is familiar I assume, Scarlett (played by Anna Drijver) is in love with Ashley Wilkes except he gets engaged to Melanie. Scarlett sees Rhett Butler (played by Nasrdin Dchar) at the engagement party and is intrigued by him. After being turned down by both men, she accepts a marriage proposal from Melanie’s younger brother Charles and so the trouble starts. The play then takes us through Scarlett’s life where she is privileged to all hell but never manages to be truly happy and inevitably loses everything including the man of her dreams, Rhett.

I really enjoyed the piece. The mix between the scenes, the songs, the set was really good. Plus Mammy’s narration brought the poignant points of that time’s culture and friction (civil war, slavery, the Klan) to attention and reformed them to something still very valid in the current day and age. The actors played well, but the supporting actors had a tad more life in their performances than the main couple did. Their chemistry was okay, but it felt a bit too stiff at times. Even taking into account the period it takes place in. In the end, though, it was definitely a show worth seeing and I’m glad I went with that whim to get the tickets.

I love how something as little as a week, week-and-a-half, off from work can restore your balance. I’m not particularly motivated (yet) to get back to work on Monday, but I’m sure that’ll come once I arrive back in the pit 😀

In the meantime, I’ve had a relaxing week. Monday I hung out with Eva, did some shopping. Eva needed a radio for the baby’s room so I took the opportunity to buy a new SD card for my camera. Afterwards we stopped for some groceries and some browsing at the Wibra. I’m a sucker for cheap/discount stores so I ended up with a bag of easter/spring inspired items to decorate the house with while I wait for spring proper to arrive.

Using the new items with the stuff from last year led me to this:

Tuesday I hung out at the Parents’ place. It had been a week and a half or so since I’d seen them, and as I usually see them at least once a week, it was overdue. It was a quiet afternoon, which is nice.

Friday evening Eva, Ingrid and Mellien came over to see me and Nienke and we went out for pancakes at the pancake restaurant in town. It was gloriously delicious (I had a ham/cheese/pineapple pancake) and we had a lot of fun talking. Afterward we went back to Nienke’s place to play Just Dance 3 on the Wii. Even Eva, despite being 37 weeks along, did a dance. The rest of us all went twice, and then we decided to do a quick round of Glee Karaoke before the other three had to go again.

Today I had lunch at the Parents’ again before returning home and finding Nienke cutting up all the trees in her yard. I didn’t really have anything better to do, and I love playing with the tree cutter so I gladly assisted her with this. Nienke’s upper arms thanked me 😀

We cut huge amounts from the conifer near her bedroom window, so to make it all fit, we had to push down on the cuttings to create more space. And to allow the lid to close…

Today I also found my very first Postcrossing card on the doormat, it came from Poland. Earlier in the week I got a message from the website that my first sent card was received. Score is now 1 for 1 and there’s four more from me underway to far away places 🙂

Of Baby Steps and Giant Leaps — The Gender Edition

Monday, February 27, 2012 by Tse Moana 2 Comments

After being quiet about the subject for quite a while I feel it’s time to start talking about gender again. And specifically mine. At first I wasn’t going to, at least not yet, but if I want this blog to be a real representation of my life, I need to incorporate this. And I find writing shit down (in addition to vocalizing to myself) helps me process things. Secondary to that, I hope this will make it easier on my friends, family and wider social circle (in a probably mostly vain hope that more than five people read this).

So, last time I spoke about my gender identity, which was March 2011, and before that (with more detail) December 2010, I mentioned how I was growing away from identifying as genderqueer (being beyond and both man and woman) to a more masculine identity. This process has continued, and not too long after the March post I realized the genderqueer moniker no longer fit at all. Woman was not a part of my gender identity. The older I get, and the more I let myself be the man I am in thought, and appearance, the more I realized I could no longer live in this body. At that point I started to seriously think about transitioning, and doing my research. Because, even with a real life example in my friend circle, everyone’s experience is different and my process will be different than his.

So, at that point I came out to myself as a transgender man.

I allowed myself to live with that (silent) label and to experience the feeling and as time went on, I felt so much more at peace on such a deep level. Even though I could (and can) still not look at myself, unclothed, either directly or in a mirror and am in denial of my body whenever I am not binding, I felt myself moving forward.

When the new year came around, I adopted my motto for this year  ‘Just Do It‘  and decided now was the time to start taking practical steps. After all, the process of transitioning can take two, three years easily and I kinda want to be whole by the time I turn 30.

So, early January I went to my doctor and asked for a referral to the Gender Team at the UMCG. She was supportive and seemed to understand at least a little, and she went to make it happen. I would get a letter with my appointment date.

Later that week or early next I don’t quite remember, I received that letter. The appointment for intake was for February 24th, at 13:45. This also meant it was time to tell The Parents. While this was a very butterfly-stomach moment, it went well. They took it better than expected (granted, they were aware of the binder and some related shit so it couldn’t really have been a total surprise). Mom understands the whole thing a bit better than Dad does, but it will come.

I told Nienke the day I’d gone to my doctor for the referral. I told Eva and Ingrid during a game night at Eva’s place along with Jarig who was obviously also there, and Anneke and Julius who dropped by to dress up Ingrid 😀 I told Gert about a week and a half or so before the appointment. I wasn’t sure yet when and how to tell others, so I decided to keep it quiet for now.

I spent the month and a half I had to wait for the appointment being ecstatic and nerve-wracked (in a good way) at the same time. Finally the day came. I’d taken the day off work, and Mom offered to drive me. I really appreciated this, not just in the ‘thanks for the ride’ way, but also on a deeper level as a show of support and love. We got to the hospital plenty on time. After I registered at the front desk, we made our way to the relevant clinic where we sat and waited for twenty minutes or so.

Then the doctor showed up and I went with him. And then it turned out the referral hadn’t quite been processed right…

Yes, the doctor was part of the Gender Team, but he was the plastic surgeon… Not quite the one you need for the intake. So we did a quick history with a basic ‘this is how I feel‘ thing and some medical history and he then wrote a consult for his Gender Team colleague. So this means I will be getting a new letter, with a new appointment some time this week (I hope) and I get to do the giddy nervousness again. Especially since there’s no telling how soon the psych guy can fit me in. I hope it’s soon.

This ending is a bit abrupt, but I’ve been going on long enough now, and I don’t quite know how to knit a proper ending here. Plus I’ve been hovering over the publish button for the last five minutes deciding if I’m ready to put this out there. I hope this will lead to a more gradual coming out, versus having to suddenly go ‘hey everybody, listen up!’

Some Random Photos, Just Because

January 2012: Monkey loves scritchies.

January 2012: I bought a laser pointer, Milo loves it (it’s between his front paws). Sadly, I seem to have misplaced it at the moment…

January 2012: Hello human!

January 2012: Went to Eva & Jarig’s for a game night with them and Ingrid. We played Scrabble.

January 2012: Because finding a more comfortable spot is so hard…

January 2012: New slippers, they look nice, and they’re warm. They were also dirt cheap so will probably not last very long.

February 2012: Milo was very interested in the key chain ducks that I keep on my World of Warcraft authenticator.

February 2012: I think this is the closest the two of them have been so far. Occasionally they get closer as they sit on the window sill together for a couple seconds or they walk past each other, but for a prolonged period of time, this is as close as it gets.

Weekend Ramblings

Sunday, January 22, 2012 by Tse Moana Leave a Comment

I love weekends, sleeping in, late nights, doing random stuff, it’s the best.

Today I slept in, and got rudely awakened by the postman ringing the bell. He had the t-shirts I ordered from Jinx before New Year’s. Bad news? Customs decided to charge me an extra twenty in additional taxes for them. And not having any loose change in the house, and the postman being one without a mobile debit machine, we agreed he would drop it off at the post office.

Then I went back to bed.

Got up an hour or so later and spent a relaxing early afternoon hanging around on the internet. Then I went to the post office and picked up the package. All three shirts fit well and are good so that’s that. The only thing I still need to get now is the Ukelele. I mailed the store for an update on when it’ll be back in stock, but so far no answer yet.

I also played around with Excel. Using it at work a lot lately has made want to play with it at home too, especially with some of more fancy features besides just making tables. So I decided to create a spreadsheet for my financial administration so it has lots of Sum functions in it. I also used three sheets within the workbook, one for the income and expenses spreadsheet and the second for a quick overview of the totals along with a small table that the graph on the third sheet is using as source data. I love messing about like that. Figuring out the right functions for the cells that needed to do something than just adding shit up was fun to do. As was making the graph.

Nienke had to work today, and as she was on her way home she suggested we order in pizza. I thought that was an excellent idea so while she was waiting for the bus I ordered. It was delivered promptly at the requested time and, as usual, it was good stuff. I love the tiramisu that Buonissimo has 😀

Watched some Supernatural during dinner and am now watching The Nine Lives of Chloe King. I hadn’t watched it before, but I was intrigued. And since it only has ten episodes it’s an easy show to just cram in. Third episode has just ended but it’s a little too late to see more. I’m gonna go sleep in a little bit, my eyes are starting to protest. More tomorrow, if I have time.

I need to sleep in first, obviously 😀 And at the end of the afternoon I’m going over to Eva’s to play games with her, Jarig and Ingrid.

Bed now, though. Definitely bed.

In closing, the shirts I got:
